Collapsed Rail Line to Re-Open in November

Services to Belfast and commuter routes to Dundalk and Drogheda were stopped when the viaduct at Malahide estuary fell into the sea in August 2009.

A delegation from the Malahide Chamber of Commerce committee, that is liaising with Iarnrod Éireann, was led on an inspection tour of the line works in September. Al Ryan, a Director in the Grand and Marine Hotels, led the group as current President of the Chamber.

There is now great news for commuters travelling to and from the Grand Hotel. Commuter rail services halted by the collapse of the viaduct shall return to normal next month with repair work well ahead of schedule. Stress tests shall take place before the line is reopened to passenger traffic

Despite fears of months of delays, a spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann confirmed that services shall resume in November, well ahead of plan.

Fourknocks

Fourknocks is a passage chamber built about 5000 years ago. It is located about 16 miles north west of Malahide. The name Fourknocks may come from Fuair Cnocs (cold hills) describing its exposed location or more recently from Four Cnocs (four hills or tombs) meaning Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth and itself.
The Fingal area has many hidden treasures to explore, Fourknocks is probably the oldest of these amazing places.

Bridge Collapse at Broadmeadows Estuary, Malahide

The collapse of the railway viaduct at Broadmeadow in Malahide thankfully did not result in any injuries or fatalities. On Sunday 23rd August a meeting was convened by all the interested parties and a committee called the Broadmeadow Liaison Group was established to operate under the auspices of the Malahide Chamber of Commerce. Since then we have spoken directly to the key people in Iarnrod Éireann and Fingal County Council and our concerns has been accepted by them. We also received the support of our local politicians.

Iarnrod Éireann has brought in experts from the U.S. to study the weir and foundations of the bridge. They are presently planning to create a new span from pier 3 to pier 5, skipping the collapsed pier. It may then be possible to reopen the bridge while further work is carried out on strengthening the remainder of the bridge. For the moment though, emphasis is being placed on securing the existing structures including the weir.

In the meantime extra train and bus services are running to and from Malahide. We will be sure to keep you updated with further information as we receive it!
