The collapse of the railway viaduct at Broadmeadow in Malahide thankfully did not result in any injuries or fatalities. On Sunday 23rd August a meeting was convened by all the interested parties and a committee called the Broadmeadow Liaison Group was established to operate under the auspices of the Malahide Chamber of Commerce. Since then we have spoken directly to the key people in Iarnrod Éireann and Fingal County Council and our concerns has been accepted by them. We also received the support of our local politicians.
Iarnrod Éireann has brought in experts from the U.S. to study the weir and foundations of the bridge. They are presently planning to create a new span from pier 3 to pier 5, skipping the collapsed pier. It may then be possible to reopen the bridge while further work is carried out on strengthening the remainder of the bridge. For the moment though, emphasis is being placed on securing the existing structures including the weir.
In the meantime extra train and bus services are running to and from Malahide. We will be sure to keep you updated with further information as we receive it!
