Village Books - Best Bookshop Up North
Village Books, Malahide are thrilled that 'The Dubliner' magazine has recently awarded them Best Bookshop up North.
This is what they wrote:
“Located on the sweet and cheerful slopes of Malahide, this busy, family-oriented shop has a cute atmosphere. It’s the sort of place that encourages its staff to recommend their favourite books each month via handwritten notes, and they will arrange book-based events for your school or fair.
The website introduces a team of sunny staff: like Peter, a genial fellow with a greying moustache, who “enjoys reading nonfiction, Irish interest and is a sudoku and puzzle nut!”
There are generous amounts of grown-up novels, and the presence of several dedicated booklovers on staff means the stock is up-to date too, with enough classics and hot-to-trot bestsellers. Just what you want in a village shop."

Grand Hotel Employee Nominated for Photography Award
Congratulations to Grand Hotel employee Alex Finnigan (Day Porter) who was recently nominated by the Irish Professional Photography Association for the I.A.D.T. Student Award 2010 for his Mural Landscapes series.
The project was shot in the heart of Belfast and the town of Maze, areas which are well known for their murals and cultural materials left as consequences of conflict. It reflects on the troubles by making visible the thoughts of ordinary people. Writings from local people were traced from the Peace Wall and projected onto the landscape, embedding their thoughts and words on the surface, creating murals on the land.
If you require any further information in relation to Alex's work, please send an email to finniganalex@yahoo.ie

Malahide - International Cricket Ground
Ireland is to get an international cricket ground under a joint venture between Malahide Cricket Club and Fingal County Council.
The council has agreed to hand over land near Malahide Castle in North County Dublin for the ground, which will have capacity for 10,000 spectators and be capable of hosting international matches. It shall be built in line with International Cricket Council specifications.
Malahide Cricket Club, which is financing much of the project, is on target to have the ground ready for use by the middle of next year, according to club official Ian Talbot. He recently stated that the club hoped that a number of 1-day matches would be played there,‘‘We hope to have games involving England and Australia," said Talbot.‘‘England have agreed to come to Ireland for a match every two years. This year, they will play at Stormont. We are confident they will come here in future."
In addition to the main pitch, the club is also pushing plans to build a smaller second pitch at its current home at Malahide Castle.
In the coming years, Talbot said it was possible it would seek to build a larger clubhouse, pavilion and media centre.
At the moment, the major cricket ground in the Republic is based on Castle Avenue in Clontarf, and can hold a capacity of 3,500 people.
Cricket has enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent years, with the Irish team reaching the second group stages of the 2007 World Cup. In recent weeks, Irish cricketer Eoin Morgan made his test debut for England, and was also part of the English side that won the recent limited overs World Cup event.

Malahide Shuttle Bus
The proposal to develop a Shuttle Bus Service for Malahide was recently refused on the grounds that it conflicted with the existing Dublin Bus service.
The Shuttle Bus was to be a frequent, low cost service, operating continuously to both ends of the town, bringing people towards the Village.
This service would have been a great boost to businesses and the Chamber’s representative on the Committee, Eamon Porter, has been actively involved in helping to promote this project.
The decision can be appealed by signing the online petition at http://www.malahideshuttle.ie/15901.html. It shall only take a minute to complete.
